Clark Labs Unveils IDRISI Selva

Clark Labs is releasing the 17th version of its IDRISI geospatial software for monitoring and modelling the Earth’s system. The IDRISI Selva software incorporates major revisions to its Land Change Modeler and Earth Trends Modeler applications. It also includes a variety of new analytical techniques, optimisations to current modules and additional import/export options.

IDRISI’s Land Change Modeler application for the modeling, prediction and impact assessment of land cover change now includes major modeling enhancements and special tools to support REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). These include accounting methodologies required for REDD projects, such as the estimation of baseline emissions from various carbon pools and the calculation of deferred emissions and carbon credits. A pioneering Land Cover Change modeling procedure, following the recently published SimWeight methodology, is now also included, as well as an integrated interface to the Maxent software for species distribution modeling.

IDRISI Selva introduces substantial enhancements to its revolutionary Earth Trends Modeler application for the analysis of patterns and trends in earth observation image time series. Particular emphasis has been given to the provision of new tools for the analysis of coupled systems (such as the oceans and atmosphere). These include Extended PCA/EOF, Multi-channel Singular Spectrum Analysis, Extended EOT, Multichannel EOT and Canonical Correlation Analysis.

IDRISI Selva delivers a variety of new display elements and enhancements for map compositions. Firstly, the new version eliminates the 32,000 row/column limitation on both the display and processing of images. IDRISI Selva additionally includes a new pyramid file structure for the rapid display of large image files, and a new automatic arrangement feature for the display of map compositions. With IDRISI Selva, vector field plots showing magnitude and direction, such as wind speed and direction, are now supported.

IDRISI has the largest support for image classifiers in the industry, and Selva continues its groundbreaking support of machine learning procedures, adding a Radial Basis Function classifier to its existing suite of MLP, SOM and Fuzzy Artmap neural networks.

Pleiades-1 Sub-metre Imagery Satellite Launched

On 17th December 2011, the high-resolution French satellite Pleiades-1 was successfully launched from Kourou launch site (French Guiana). This 1-ton spacecraft was put into the morning sun-synchronous orbit at 694km altitude and, after orbital testing, will start delivering colour images of the Earth’s surface at a spatial resolution of up to 50cm.

The European EADS-Astrium consortium has been developing the Pleiades satellites since late 2003 together with Thales Alenia Space company: It is based on smaller, cheaper, more agile satellites than its predecessors, highly successful Spot series of satellites which have operated an uninterrupted service since 1986 and whose platform is currently also in use for nearly all European Low Earth Observation programmes (notably ERS, Envisat, MetOp and Helios). Pléiades incorporates innovative technology such as the gyroscopic actuators that will be carried for the first time in Europe on board the Pléiades satellites to provide unprecedented performance.

Jan Tunger, Absolvent des Bachelor-Studiengangs Vermessung und Geoinformatik, erhält den VDV-Preis für die „Bundesweit beste Bachelor-Arbeit“. Dieser Preis wird einmal jährlich vom Verband Deutscher Vermessungsingenieure e.V. (VDV) für herausragende Abschlussarbeiten verliehen. Die eingereichten Arbeiten sollen für die Entwicklung des Vermessungswesens oder der Geoinformatik in Theorie und Praxis von Bedeutung sein und das breite Arbeitsfeld der Ingenieure dokumentieren.

Jan Tunger, Bachelor of Engineering von der Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart, erhielt die Auszeichnung „Bundesweit beste Bachelor-Arbeit“ für seine Arbeit mit dem Thema: “Entwicklung von ArcGIS Server Diensten zur Konstruktion und Identifikation in Web CoDi”.

Jan Tunger befasst sich mit der Entwicklung und Implementierung zweier webbasierter Dienste. Einer der entwickelten Dienste bereitet bestehende geografische Informationen als Konstruktionsgrundlage auf – der andere Dienst bereitet Sachdaten anwendungsabhängig zur Objektidentifikation auf und beide stellen diese dem GIS-Werkzeug WebCoDi zur Verfügung. Jan Tunger hat die ihm gestellte Aufgabe professionell gelöst und ist sehr strukturiert und zielgerichtet vorgegangen, was sich u. a. in der sehr guten Dokumentation seiner Arbeit zeigt.

Die Arbeit wurde von der Jury als sehr herausragend und innovativ beurteilt: „Die Arbeit von Herrn Tunger ist gekennzeichnet durch gründliche und umfassende Untersuchungen, die einen hervorragenden Eindruck hinterlassen und durch praxisrelevante Darstellungen beeindruckt“, sagte VDV-Präsident Wilfried Grunau nach der Juryentscheidung.

Die Abschlussarbeit wurde mit der Note 1,0 bewertet. Betreut wurde die Arbeit von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietrich Schröder.

Niedersächsische Landesforsten navigieren mit dem LOGIBALL Business Navigator Holz und Forst

Die Niedersächsischen Landesforsten beauftragten den Herner Anbieter mit der Lieferung von 500 Lizenzen des LOGIBALL Business Navigators mit einer Spezialkarte des niedersächsischen LKW- und PKW-befahrbaren Waldwegebestandes sowie des öffentlichen Wegenetzes. Die Auslieferung ist Ende Juni 2011 geplant.

Ushahidi and Esri Team to Improve Crisis Mapping Services

Partnership Enhances Ushahidi Web Platform with Extensive GIS Data, Advanced Analytic Tool

Esri today announced a partnership with Ushahidi that will improve the collection and use of crowd-sourced information during large-scale emergencies. Ushahidi is a nonprofit organization that allows local observers to submit reports to the Ushahidi Web platform using their mobile phones or the Internet during a crisis. Esri is providing software, services, and training to support Ushahidi’s Web platform. The result is better information more readily accessible by decision makers and the public.

Both victims and witnesses of a crisis or disaster can request assistance or report conditions using text messaging capabilities from their personal phone or Internet-enabled device. These reports are collected, geo-referenced and then mapped on Ushahidi’s web-based map. Esri and Ushahidi will now work together to make this information available to more people, including those using Esri geographic information system (GIS) technology. This will provide access to Ushahidi information to relief and response organizations that use GIS analysis and modeling for humanitarian response and relief.

“Ushahidi has provided an invaluable information service during crisis events, such as the Haiti earthquake, by supplying a social media platform to capture and communicate critical information for response and relief services,” says Russ Johnson, director of public safety solutions, Esri. “Esri wants to support these efforts by making available GIS tools that assist in analyzing, displaying, and publishing critical information on the Ushahidi platform.”

“Our strategic relationship with Esri represents an important step forward for our combined user base,” says Patrick Meier, director of crisis mapping at Ushahidi. “Esri’s technology will provide Ushahidi users with access to extensive GIS data and advanced analytical tools. Esri users will also have the ability to contribute to Ushahidi mapping efforts in more seamless ways and use this data for further analysis.”

Ushahidi, which is Swahili for “testimony” or “witness,” first established itself by developing a Web site created in the aftermath of Kenya’s disputed 2007 presidential election. The site collected eyewitness reports of violence sent in by e-mail and text messages and placed them on maps. The free and open-source software platform developed for the site has since been improved and used for a number of events. For instance, in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, thousands of people sent text messages for help. That information was mapped and used by emergency responders to provide needed resources quickly where they were needed most.

Auf der Gov 2.0 Summit-Konferenz in Washington, D.C. kündigte am 8. September 2010 Jack Dangermond, Gründer und Präsident der Firma ESRI an:

“Countless nonprofit organizations with many different levels of hardworking staff and volunteers are trying to make our world a better place. With this flexible program, we hope to give these organizations the tools they need to better visualize and analyze spatial information so that they can accomplish their various missions.”

ESRI hatte auch in den vergangenen Jahren bereits verschiedene Organisationen unterstützt (http://www.esri.com/grants/).

Das Angebot ist jedoch nicht als Open Source zu verstehen, da der Source Code nicht frei ist. Die Lizenz ist jeweils auf ein Jahr befristet und

may only be used for your internal nonprofit purposes.

Nach Ablauf eines Jahres wird die Qualifizierung der Organisation erneut geprüft. Eine Organisation muss also sehr genau prüfen, ob die Rahmenbedingungen für ihre Ausrichtung und Ziele passend sind und ob nicht in wirklich freie Software investiert werden sollte.

ESRI® announces the ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine, Server) 10.0 Personal Geodatabase Unicode Item Definition Patch. This patch addresses an issue where Unicode strings in the definitions of items will become corrupt when using version 10 personal geodatabases with ArcGIS 10. The patch deals specifically with the issue listed below under Issues Addressed with this Patch.

NIM059333 -Object definitions containing Unicode characters stored in 10.0 personal (access) geodatabases are not persisted correctly.

Description: Non-english Unicode characters used in the definition of items become corrupted in version 10 personal geodatabases when using ArcGIS 10. This error corrupts the source data and is non-recoverable (emphasizing by the author).

Only specific uses of non-english Unicode characters in the following item definitions will cause this behavior to occur (this is not a comprehensive list.): domain names, domain description, domain codes, default values, field aliases, table aliases, subtype names, subtype descriptions, feature dataset names, simple relationship names (but not attributed relationships), replica names, toolboxes names, topology names, geometric network names, network dataset names, terrain names, representation names.

Other uses of non-english Unicode characters, such as in the contents or names of geodatabase tables or feature classes will not be affected by this issue.

The ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap is designed to help ArcGIS Desktop 10 users to become an active member in the growing community of users building an open and freely available database of geographic data.

The provided tools allow you to download data from the OSM servers and store it locally in a geodatabase. You can then use the familiar editing environment of ArcGIS Desktop to create, modify, or delete data. Once you are done editing, you can post back the edit changes to OSM to make them available to all OSM users.

This site provides access to the released versions of the ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap (OSMEditor), the source code, as well as documentation and issue tracker.
