The International Symposium on Digital Earth is a series of symposia, which is an important academic event of the International Society for Digital Earth. The International Society for Digital Earth is a non-political, non-governmental and not-for-profit international organization. To date, the series of International Symposium on Digital Earth was successfully convened in China (1999), Canada (2001), the Czech Republic (2003), Japan (2005), USA (2007) and China (2009), respectively.

WALIS Forum is one of the premier GIS conferences in Australia. WALIS (the Western Australian Land Information System) will be celebrating its 30 Year anniversary with a world-class conference featuring international speakers, workshops on key issues, a fabulous trade exhibition and brilliant Perth hospitality.

The 2011 Western Australian Natural Resource Management Conference（Western Australian NRM Conference）provides an excellent opportunity for those concerned with sustainable management of our natural resources to draw-together knowledge on current best practice in natural resource management.

The combination of ISDE7, WALIS Forum and the Western Australian NRM Conference will offer an exciting program to delegates, and enable digital earth modelers and experts in the spatial sciences and natural resources management industries – providing a brand new opportunity to share their ideas and insights on how we share knowledge and act together globally.

Program
The conference program will cover a broad range of digital earth modelling, natural resources management and geographic information issues. The Conference will involve plenary sessions，parallel sessions, workshops and “coffee house” sessions with specific land care and digital earth themes. A range of innovative sessions that cater to a wide audience also will be held. The Conference will feature a ‘Rapid Fire – Emerging Technologies’ seminar where presenters will be given the opportunity to exhibit or showcase their organisation. If you believe this session will be of benefit and you would like to participate, please make a note in your abstract submission.

Theme and Topics
The overall theme of the Conference is ‘The Knowledge Generation’. Some topics for papers are Digital Earth Vision, Technologies and Applications, Earth Observation Technologies, Population Growth and Infrastructure Development, Managing Land and Water, Emergency Management, etc.

DIME Workshop, Max Planck Institute of Economics, Jena, Germany, February 18-19, 2011

Development studies have devoted a large amount of research to understand the processes and impacts of institutional and technological change, using different theoretical and methodological approaches. Notable examples are the post WWII contributions of Hirschman, Rosenstein-Rodan and Myrdalamong others, recent economic growth literature, anthropological studies of participatory development, international political economy, economic and cultural geographies of globalization, and the evolutionary and institutional approaches that incorporate insights from various social science sub disciplines, including economic sociology of networks. Despite the richness of contributions, crossbreeding between different research programs and disciplines has been occasional, and cross-disciplinary discussions of research results on focused issues are rare.

A privileged vantage point for conducting such cross-disciplinary discussions is provided by the phenomenon of agrarian change, which has allowed detailed analyses of the relations between institutions (e.g. property rights, socio-cultural power structures, colonial burdens and their post-colonial incarnations), agri-production technologies, exchange practices and wider rural development. The study of agrarian change has also sparked debates on appropriate technology, structural change, poverty alleviation, distribution of resources, and the functioning of markets. Recently, in the wake of the 2007-8 food crisis and massive land-grab investments in Africa for food and fuel, coupled with continuing smallholder distress and indebtedness in fastgrowing countries such as India and China, agrarian change and food security/sovereignty have become crucial points of debate on development processes and policies at the national and global scales.

The organisers aim to bring together contributions – theoretical and empirical, qualitative and quantitative, from any disciplinary background – that focus on the multifaceted interactions between (groups of) individuals, science and technology, institutional structures, and the different social practices associated with them in development processes. We especially encourage contributions that map these interactions in the context of the current agrarian transformation in developing countries through further integration into global and local branded markets, changing patterns of use and distribution of resources (e.g. due to climate change impacts), and the multi-dimensional sustainability of development processes.

The following is an incomplete list of themes and topics that should serve as a guide to submit papers, and for which one or more leading scholars in the field has been invited to contribute

AGRARIAN CHANGE:

Technological change in agriculture (A)

The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure – GSDI 12 World Conference took place in Singapore from 19 to 22 October 2010. The partners organizing this conference included the GSDI Association, the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia & the Pacific (PCGIAP) and the Singapore Land Authority (SLA). The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) is also a founding member of the GSDI Association and was a GSDI 12 World Conference collaborator.
“Governments at all levels in all countries depend on information about location and place,” noted Abbas Rajabifard, President of the GSDI Association, “and the rapid advance of technology makes such information much easier to collect, use, and distribute. This creates opportunities and challenges for all countries. Technical innovation creates a need for policy innovation and for collaboration among government, the private sector and academia. GSDI World Conferences provide a unique forum for representatives of all these sectors to network and learn about the technical, societal, legal and policy issues concerning spatial data infrastructures.”

The theme for GSDI 12 was “Realizing Spatially Enabled Societies.” The conference organizers set out to encourage collaboration to help create an enabling environment that enhances outcomes in societies, economies and the global environment. A peer-reviewed book on this topic was launched during the conference. It focuses on research, emerging trends and critical assessment and it showcases examples of spatial enablement serving societal needs. More than 100 countries are actively developing spatial data infrastructures, and with over 650 attendees, GSDI 12 proved to be a very successful event. Participants listened to experts speak on a wide range of topics including technology, standards, and spatial law and policy. A session at the conference presented by World Bank personnel focused on development of a guide for ‘How to get started with SDIs for developing nations.’ Participants listened to speakers from around the world, shared knowledge and traded experiences.

The 12th GSDI Conference was conducted jointly with the 16th annual meeting of the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia & the Pacific (PCGIAP), representing 56 nations in the region. There was also an inaugural meeting of the International Geospatial Society, a member arm of the GSDI Association for individuals.

GSDI 12 Conference proceedings are available at www.gsdi.org/gsdi12.

The GSDI 13 Conference will take place in Quebec City Canada in May 2012.

Lebensqualität als Maßstab erfolgreicher Stadtentwicklung;

der Einfluss “neuer Technologien” auf die Stadtentwicklung;

räumliche Aspekte von Innovation, Wissens- und Technologietransfer;

Management von rapidem Wachstum, struktureller Veränderung, Schrumpfung;

Nachhaltigkeit durch intelligentes Ressourcenmanagement;

Stabilität, Sicherheit und Verwundbarkeit moderner Städte;

vorausschauende Planung unter ökonomisch schwierigen Bedingungen;

Miteinander statt Nebeneinander: die “Wieder-Durchmischung” von Städten;

neues Leben in alten Strukturen.
