Ecological Informatics (EI) is a trans-disciplinary subject, which integrates ecology, informatics, computational and social sciences, in order to improve our understanding of ecological processes and expand socio-ecological theory to integrate the earth’s natural systems, human values, human health and well being.

The program – M. Phil. EI – at IIITM-K is the first academic exercise in Indian subcontinent that imparts computational and IT/informatics skills to students with background in natural sciences. It aims to prepare students for a career in ecological research, with a special emphasis on using Information Technology. The inclusion of social dimension makes this program globally peerless at the same time, complement development of critical thinking ability of the students.

M. Phil-EI is a one-year full time program. Students earn the degree by completing 30 credit points, split among course work, seminar and a thesis. The program is so designed that students spent their first six months at IIITM-K before proceeding to associating institutions in order to carry out either a research project or complete a pertinent review and write a thesis.
