Google is working with the University of Washington on an open source field data collection tool called the Open Data Kit (ODK).
Open Data Kit is a free and open-source set of tools which help organizations author, field, and manage mobile data collection solutions. ODK provides an out-of-the-box solution for users to:
Build a data collection form or survey;
Collect the data on a mobile device and send it to a server; and
Aggregate the collected data on a server and extract it in useful formats.
In addition to socio-economic and health surveys with GPS locations and images, ODK is being used to create decision support for clinicians and for building multimedia-rich nature mapping tools. See the list available tools, featured deployments, and implementation companies for more examples of what the ODK community is doing. We welcome and encourage participation from the user community.
According to Spatial Sustain blog, the system is being put to work in many developing nations for mapping and data collection efforts, including in Mexico, Tanzania, and Brazil.

As the amount of user generated, spatio-temporal data grows exponentially, also the necessity of suitable cartographical representations increases more and more. Hence, this Workshop will address special aspects related to the generation of maps from user generated data, among others the topics of the workshop can be as follows:
- Technical aspects (such as programming APIs, data formats, etc.)
- Specific design aspects in the face of user orientation, participation, collaboration
- Quality of map design and measures for quality assurance
- Aspects of data privacy
Both theoretical work and best practice applications are expected, of course, also ongoing work is welcome.
Important dates:
March 31, 2012: Submission of abstracts (approx. 1 page, PDF or MS Word format) – submit via E-Mail
April 30, 2012: Notification of authors and publication of preliminary program.
October 8th, 2012, Hannover: Workshop (just before Intergeo and Kartographentag 2012)

Ein gutes Navigationsgerät ist eine feine Sache – man spart Zeit bei den Reisevorbereitungen, wird je nach Ausführung intelligent an Staus vorbeigeleitet und kommt regelmäßig auch ohne Ortskenntnis an sein Ziel. Ein 21 Jahre alter Autofahrer aus dem Kreis Calw machte am Sonntagmittag auf der Autobahn A 5 zwischen Bruchsal und Karlsruhe ganz andere Erfahrungen.

Auf http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/program/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2012 hat Google eine Liste der im Rahmen von Google Summer of Code 2012 geförderten Projekte publiziert. Darunter finden sich auch diverse Projekte aus dem Geoinformatikbereich, die z. B. OpenStreetMap, diverse OSGeo-Softwarelösungen, Blender, Sahana…
Gesucht werden nun teilweise noch konkrete Projektbeschreibungen, Studenten, die die Projekte bearbeiten wollen, sowie Mentoren zur Betreuung.

Mit WorldMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu/) bietet selbst Harvard, Center for Geographic Analysis, ein eigenes Portal an, auf dem Nutzer, auch gemeinsam mit anderen, Karten publizieren können. Im Gegensatz zu Applikationen, wie sie von Google® oder Esri® angeboten werden, beruht dies auf einer Open Source Lösung, die beispielsweise bei Virtual Kenya eingesetzt wird. Das Repository dazu findet sich bei GitHub.
Es handelt sich um eine cloudbasierte Lösung, die in Amazon’s EC2 Cloud Infrastructure gehostet wird, ein Ansatz, der auch bei Esri zum Einsatz kommt.
